14. Patinating and Sealing

Patinas originated as the natural oxidation that most metals undergo over time. Because bronze is prized for the beauty of its various patinas, sculptors accelerate this process using a number of chemical catalysts.


The bronze is heated to make the surface receptive to the catalyst, which is applied by spraying or brushing.


A range of finishes can be achieved that are identical to natural patinas. Outdoor bronzes tend to turn pale green, for example, while indoor bronzes turn brown.


The patinated surface is sealed with lacquer or wax to arrest further oxidation.
